'Black Henna' -an Unsafe, Mislabeled Chemical Dye.

The Hair Dye 'BLACK HENNA'. What Does It Mean?*

About the misnomer: 'Black Henna':

• 'Black Henna' is not pure, nor is it pure henna. Pure henna is a green plant (Lawsonia inermis)and the green leaves are dried, crushed and powdered. When used alone it will turn the hair an orange-red color. If it is properly used with pure indigo, the hair will dye to black.  If it is mixed with a very toxic chemical called, para-phenylenediamine (PPD), “coal tar”.
• 'Black Henna' is not pure indigo or 'black indigo'. Pure indigo is a green plant(Indigofera tinctoria) and the green leaves are dried, crushed and powdered. When used properly with pure henna, it will turn hair to a black color. However, if it is mixed with chemicals dyes, or even henna that has been compromised by chemicals, including PPD, then it is not pure indigo or the so-called, 'black henna'.

• PPD is known to cause severe skin allergies such as: Permanent scarring, marked redness and swelling of scalp, face and eyes, eyelids may completely shut, allergic contact dermatitis may spread throughout body.
• Severe PPD allergy can also result in contact urticaria and anaphylaxis on rare occasions. See: NZ Dermatological Society report and photos.  
• PPD*: “This compound is used in almost every hair dye on the market, regardless of brand. The darker the colour, usually, the higher the concentrations. Some of the so-called "natural" and "herbal" hair colours, while ammonia-free, contain PPD. Some products sold as henna also contain PPD added, particularly so-called 'black henna'. In many cases, PPD causes allergic reaction, and can cause scarring in some people. PPD should never be applied directly to the skin in its pure form or mixed with anything else.”

The Indigo Plant, an Ancient Hair Coloring Beauty Secret

The Indigo Plant, Botanical History

The botanical name for the indigo plant is Indigofera Tinctoria. Other synonyms are true indigo, pigmentum indicum, neel and neelii.

The indigo plant is actually a leafy shrub that grows 3-6 feet tall with magenta-colored flowers.

The indigo plant has been used since ancient times as in natural dyes. It was used by men and women to dye textiles and hair. Indigo dye is made from processing the plant’s leaves by soaking them in water and allowing them to ferment. This converts the natural glycoside indicant into the dye, indigotin. It can then be pressed into cakes, dried and powdered.

In natural dyes (for hair coloring), the green leaves of the indigo plant are dried, crushed and powdered. When used properly with pure henna, indigo dye will create shades ranging from brown to jet black color. It also makes hair soft and silky to the touch.

Pure henna powder and indigo dye from the crushed leaves of the indigo plant have been used for centuries to make a jet black henna hair dye. Both are currently available for anyone desiring natural dyes for hair coloring made in the traditional manner.

What Pure Indigo is NOT:  

It is not the so-call misnomer, “Black Henna” hair dye.

"Black Henna" is not pure indigo dye or "black" indigo. If henna and indigo are mixed with chemicals dyes, or any henna hair dye that has been compromised by chemicals, including PPD, then: it is not pure henna, pure indigo or pure anything. Stay far away from mislabeled, “Black Henna” hair dye. It is not 100% all natural indigo dye. It is not 100% all natural hair dye.

Black Hair Color for Men and Women. Get it Back –Naturally!

Black Hair from Melanin, Eumelanin

There are two ways to get black hair color naturally. The first is to be born with lots of melanin and eumelanin, since the more you have, the darker your hair will be. Obviously, if you were born with black hair and still have it, you can be thankful for your lustrous hair.

Hair color pigmentation comes from two types of melanin, eumelanin and pheomelanin. Red hair comes from pheomelanin. About the Popular Misnomer: 'Black Henna':

The 'Black Henna' name is misused for skin (tattoo) and hair dye products, are not only derived from the plant, but a combination of chemical dye mixed with natural, usually low-grade plants made into a black powder or liquid dye.

• 'Black Henna' is not pure indigo or 'black indigo'.
• The indigo plant is NOT BLACK.
• Pure indigo is a green plant (Indigofera tinctoria) and the green leaves are dried, crushed and powdered. When used properly with pure henna, it will turn hair to a black color.
• If indigo is mixed with chemicals dyes, or even henna that has been compromised by chemicals, including PPD, then it is not pure indigo or the so-called, 'black henna'. It is a harmful chemical hair dye.
  
• 'Black Henna' is not pure, nor is it pure henna.
• Pure henna is NOT BLACK.
• Pure henna is a green plant (Lawsonia inermis) and the green leaves are dried, crushed and powdered. When used alone it will turn the hair an orange-red color. If it is properly used with pure indigo, the hair will dye to black. 
• Even if pure henna is mixed with para-phenylenediamine (PPD), 'coal tar', it is no longer pure henna, but is a harmful chemical hair dye that can cause severe allergic contact dermatitis and even be deadly.

Jet Black Hair from BAQ Henna. Part 2 of 2.

Jet Black Hair Using BAQ Henna and Pure Indigo

This is a continuation of a previous article about how to create jet black hair color using body art quality henna and indigo (henndigo*): Jet Black Hair from BAQ Henna. Part 1 of 2.

If you don’t mind spending several hours dying your hair color naturally, this is an old technique you may prefer. Perhaps you simply want jet black hair or to cover gray hair, using a traditional method of ancient ingredients and avoid the harmful effects of chemical hair dye. If you are pregnant or nursing, then this is the recommended method for hair color if you desire jet black hair. If you are a man who wants to avoid dangerous chemical progressive dyes and get jet black hair, then this is a preferred hair dye method for you too.

If you don’t have the time and want to naturally dye your hair in about 90 minutes, use 100% Lustrous Henna in Soft Black (no jet black hair shade yet). 

Jet Black Hair: BAQ Henna-Indigo Application STEP TWO

Prepare the Indigo Paste

Note: Before rinsing out henna, prepare the indigo powder and make a paste as follows: (The dye release is very quick.) Mix indigo powder with warm water until it’s the consistency of thick yogurt. Add 1 teaspoon salt to the indigo powder if you believe your hair is resistant and to get even darker results. Mix in 1-2 drops of fragrant essential oil, if desired.

Apply the Indigo Paste

Apply the indigo paste to the previously hennaed hair in sections, completely coating all the hair down to the roots. It’s easiest if you start from the back and move forward. Follow the same protective instructions as when applying the henna paste to avoid unwanted staining.

Wrap hair in a shower cap or plastic wrap to keep heat in. After an hour check color, if desired. Wait for 1-2 hours to achieve complete dying results.

Rinse Out the Indigo Paste

Rinse to remove all paste.

Gently condition with all natural conditioner like All- Natural Imbue Nurturing Conditioner to soften hair, if desired. However, it best not to shampoo hair for at least 48 hour to allow for the indigo to totally oxidize and the color to set. (If a slight greenish tone appears initially, don't fret because it will disappear once the indigo is completely oxidized.)

Important Reminders

• Gray hair: As most of us are aware, gray hair can be really resistant. Therefore, it may be necessary to leave the henna and indigo on for a longer time period or repeat the complete application. You might want to wait a couple of days for the indigo to oxidize, to be sure of the true color, before deciding to repeat the application.
• Please note: This is a basic method for producing jet black hair with body art quality (BAQ) henna, however, there are variations that are known to work equally as well.

• Henna paste stores well, sealed in freezer for up to 2 weeks. Indigo paste does not freeze or keep well; it must be used immediately.
• Amount of each product to use depends on hair thickness and length:
• Short hair: 100 grams; Shoulder length hair: 200-300 grams; Long hair: 400-500 grams.
• Although henna hair dye allergy is extremely rare, always do a strand test; also to be sure of desired hair color.

Variation: Quicker Henna Hair Dye “Baked Release” Method

*Henndigo: a modern term describing the mixture of henna hair dye with indigo to color gray hair and produce dark brown shades of hair color with BAQ henna and pure indigo powder.
